The Merbau, which originates from Southeast Asia, belongs to the family of the Fabaceae and is closely related to the genus Afzelia, which is mainly native to Africa. It can reach a growth height of up to 25m and a trunk diameter of 1,5m. The Merbau is under CITES observation and it is expected to be included in the list of CITES protected commercial timbers in the future. In Germany, the Merbau is mainly used as a floor covering due to its smoothness and hardness, with which it also withstands heavy loads. In addition, the veneer of the Merbau is used for doors and stairs.
